Mariam Ahmed is a Californian poet. She has her Bachelor’s degree in English with a minor in Sociology from UC Davis and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing with an emphasis in Poetry from San Diego State University. As a Pakistani-born American raised in the Bay Area and Folsom, CA, Mariam is a first generation scholar and the first woman in her family to attend college. She is a certified Poet-Teacher with California Poets in the Schools, and her work has been published by many literary journals and presses. She also teaches English to Afghan refugee women and children through Survival English for Newly Arrived Afghans (SENA), a program within the San Diego nonprofit organization, License to Freedom. In addition to writing and teaching, Mariam enjoys meditating and exploring beaches.
Shree Patel is a senior at Del Norte High School. She enjoys baking and playing badminton in her free time. Shree is also involved in HOSA at Del Norte, and is interested in pursuing biotechnology. She loves volunteering and giving back to the community! As a member of the youth committee, she looks forward to positively impacting the lives of women in San Diego!
Raina Agrawal is a senior at Poway High School. In her free time she enjoys playing basketball, reading, baking, playing guitar, and spending time with friends and family. She has been a Girl Scout for 11 years and loves that she gets to learn important life skills while making friends and volunteering. She is passionate about giving back to the community, and does so by running clubs that donate products and raise money for others in need. As a member of SD Nari’s Youth Commitee, she hopes to inspire women and make in impact in our community!
Simi Gulrajani is a senior at Del Lago Academy. She has a strong passion for reading and writing, and aspires to go to law school in the future. One hobby she’s quite passionate about is dancing, which she has been doing since six years old. She is vice president of her school’s DECA chapter, which is a business-oriented club for high schoolers. Additionally, she loves volunteering, and hopes to get involved with her community through SD Nari!
Niharika (Nikki) Mahendiyan is a senior at Scripps Ranch High School. In her free time, she enjoys reading and loves to play the piano. Additionally, she enjoys spending time with her friends and family. In the future, Nikki plans to pursue a career in Medicine or Computer Science. Currently, Nikki is working on creating a community service club at her school, and wants to give back to her community in as many ways as possible. She is very glad to have joined the SD Nari Youth Committee and can’t wait to work with her peers to bring a change in the community and support South Asian women.
Shriya Mathur is a sophomore at Scripps Ranch High School. Experiencing the outdoors is important to her as she loves the beach, evening walks, and exploring new places. Outside of school she is involved in Karate and Swim. She has been committed to Karate since nine years old, and has enjoyed learning different techniques and making new friends throughout her journey. As a member of SD Nari’s Youth Committee, she hopes to become more immersed in her own culture and make an impact on her community!
Aditi Sathe is a junior at Scripps Ranch High School. One of her biggest passions is dance and she has been learning Kathak for the last 8 years. She loves working with younger kids and also enjoys volunteering in her community. She is also involved in the Red Cross Club at her school. She loves to spend time with her family and friends as well as make new friends. She hopes that by joining the SD Nari Youth Committee she can help support South Asian women and give them voice that they deserve.
Anya Kalia is a senior at Torrey Pines High School. She loves traveling to explore and experience new places. Anya is very passionate about acting, and has featured in a few projects. She enjoys creative writing and reading. Another quality of hers is dancing, which she has been doing since a very young age. Anya is also pursuing business and marketing. She loves playing basketball in her free time with friends. Anya is very eager to give back to the community, as a member of SD Nari’s Youth Committee, and is excited to encourage, motivate, and bring positivity to others!
Anushree Magi is a junior at Rancho Bernardo High School. She loves to bake, play badminton, spend time with friends/family, and travel. She has also been learning Kathak for 13 years. As Vice President of three school clubs and an SD Nari Youth Committee member, Anushree aims to inspire confidence, resilience, and community engagement among women, promoting cultural heritage and inclusive spaces.
Nishi Patel is a senior at Scripps Ranch High School. She enjoys fostering puppies in her free time and volunteers at Helen Woodward Animal Rescue. In total, she has fostered over 20 puppies. Nishi also enjoys reading, some of her favorite books are We Are The Ants and Dune. Her favorite thing is spending time with friends and watching Star Wars. She aspires to pursue a career in engineering or biology. In addition, she enjoys volunteering and tries to give back to her community in any way possible.
Aashiyana Patel is a senior at Torrey Pines High School. She is passionate about acting and singing. She has a singing background of 7 years and it is one of her favorite hobbies. Aashiyana also loves to dance and spent 2 years learning Bollywood dance. In her free time, she enjoys engaging in many forms of art, including drawing and painting, as well as expressing her creativity through baking. When Aashiyana entered high school, she furthered her computer programming skills by joining her school’s robotics team, The Millenium Falcons. As a member of the SD Nari Youth Committee, she aspires to further her interest in empowering women and giving back to the community.
