Anand Basti …………..@ Sada Rahe Masti
There is a new chapter in the lives of many Indian American seniors in San Diego. In the past, seniors lived in multigenerational homes in India. Today, they are part of a growing demographic in the US who are seeking to preserve their independence while keeping in touch with their families and culture and are looking for an independent or assisted living arrangement that will allow them to do so.
The senior committee has three divisions: Events & Education, Moksha & Anand Basti. Moksha provides support services for those who are grieving the passing of a loved one, while its newest division, Anand Basti, functions as a liaison between seniors who are interested in looking into independent or assisted living and places that offer those accommodations
The generation that immigrated to the US in the 60s and 70s as adults now needs care. “It is no longer a given that older Indian Americans will live with their family. Times and family dynamics are changing,” says Dr. Nanda Subbarao, SD Nari’s chaplain. Although quite a few of their adult children have settled in other cities, the parents prefer to stay in San Diego, in the city with which they are familiar and where they have their own circle of friends.
“The need of the hour is to find a place where seniors can stay comfortably, have friends with similar interests, comfort food, cultural activities and transportation for medical appointments or other excursions,” according to Board member and Anand Basti organizer Harini Narasimhan.
True to their slogan @ Sada Rahe Masti, the Ananda Basti team diligently researched retirement communities which were deemed suitable based on their proximity to temples, Indian grocery stores and cultural activities. They attended presentations, collected brochures and data and created spreadsheets and comparison charts
