WHAT TO DO IF A LOVED ONE PASSES AWAY

Though it’s not something we like to think about, there are a series of steps we must take when someone passes away. Knowing what to do or expect can reduce some of the stress of a difficult time.

1) The first thing that must be done if death occurs at home, unattended by a physician, is to make a call to “911.” A law enforcement officer will come to the home. At the officer’s request, a coroner, medical examiner or justice of the peace will come to the house and pronounce death. Should death occur at a hospital or hospice, the attending physician will pronounce death.
2) If you are not at home- Call a family member, friend or clergy to come be with you. Do not get in your vehicle and drive
3) Drink some liquids (not caffeine or alcohol) if possible.
4) Call a mortuary( list is below)
5) Call a priest of your religious denomination
6) Take out your list of immediate family, close friends and /or employer or business colleagues. Notify by phone

CHECK LIST FOR THE FIRST 24 HOURS AFTER SOMEONE PASSES AWAY

Step 1

Call one of the following mortuaries
( Note: SD Nari does not benefit from any of the suppliers- this list is provided as a service only)

In San Diego County there are dozens of funeral homes and cremation services. Who to call and what services to choose can be a daunting task.

The funeral homes mentioned below are noted since they offer cremation services and are familiar with the rituals associated. They also take the time to train their staff about the various beliefs and ceremonies.

At the family’s request, hospital or hospice personnel can contact the family’s service provider and arrange the transfer of the loved one into their care. If death occurs at home, the family will call their service provider. If an autopsy is required, the loved one may be transferred to the coroner’s or medical examiner’s office. After the autopsy, the service provider will transfer the loved one into their care.

The Antyesthi samskara ( Hindu final rites for the deceased) are meant for the benefit of the soul, specifically to help the soul move to its next life in peace and harmony. All the elements of the anyesthi – the chanting of prayers, bhajans,Vishnu Prasad, Ganges water, Tulasi, and Agni as the fire of cremation, all help purify the soul for a better future.

The Sraddha ceremony is performed after the antyesthi and annually thereafter. This involves the worship of the Supreme Lord and offering maha-prasada to the departed soul and ancestors. Also Tapana ( sacred Ganges water) and pindas( rice balls) are offered . All of these assist the departed souls in their advancement towards God.

These two final rites are very important for the relatives and friends of the departed soul. This also offers closure and opportunities to express their love , respect and appreciation to the deceased.

Words of wisdom from the Bhagavad Gita

For one who has taken birth, death is certain…….(2.27)

As the embodied soul continually passes in this body from boyhood to youth to old age, the soul similarly passes into another body at death. The self-realized soul is not bewildered by such a change. ( 2.13)

For the soul there is never birth nor death. Nor having once been , does he ever cease to be . He is unborn, eternal, every existing, undying and primeval. He is not slain when the body is slain. (2.20)

And whoever , at the time of death, quits his body remembering Me alone, at once attains My nature. Of this there is no doubt. (8.5)
Always think of Me and become My devotee. Worship Me and offer your homage unto Me. Thus you will come to Me without fail. I promise you this because you are My very dear friend ( 18.65)
